  5. Hector's Free write- Well i was looking over the links and read all about the story that happened in Nigeria. It is really interesting to find out that even in the poorest countries, their leaders are corrupted and try to benefit from all the money. The letter I read was written by Mrs. Mustapha who was addressing the happening of her husband "Mustapha". She said that her husband is accused of tooling billions of american dollars. Furthermore, she also mentioned that $6.8 belonged to him, and that its was planned to used for investment overseas. The money is in cash and not traceable, only she and him knows where is at.

  6. This is JoeAnn Noreiga responding to Hectors message, I too read the story and felt that this is like a Bernie Madoff pounzy scheme to bilk unspecting americans out of their life savings or to involve them into something illegal with criminal ramifications. Also with the suggestion of playing a game to me, may cause a virus in my computer.

  7. Hi, this is Jasmine.

And i agree with JoeAnn, i think it was interesting, also i realized that it was a watse of time. I also think that e-mails like "Mrs. Mustapha" are some sort of virus or schemes, to kind a trick people.

  15. bertha dessein freewrite- after i read the letter that Mrs Mustapha wrote to her dear friend,I said to myself probably Mrs. Mustapha and her husband did steal the money because, if they didn't why are they trying to invest it so fast? This kind of money should b in a bank account or a CD so the bank can invest it for them. Even in the poorest country people are still stealing what is not rightfully theirs. when will society change. Mrs Mustapha should also b in jail as well.

  23. Hi. JoeAnn asked "Ms. Patterson what was the point of the sounds?" Mendi+Keith Obadike explain the sounds in their statement, "At the WITHDRAWAL module, you will find audio pieces based on the 4-1-9 scam. These initial sound pieces are meditations on the repeated structures of the letters: the apologies, the no-risk guarantees, the calls to secrecy, and the descriptions of loss or violence. As participants create letters in the DEPOSIT area, we will use these texts as the source for new audio pieces."

Bertha asked, "professor patterson can u explain this website to me further more,I got a virus on my computer because of this site?" The 4-1-9 website should not give your computer a virus. In response to your question, I have a question for you: Which of our vocabulary terms might help you explain the website?

  24. Marla Franklin Freewrite; this reminded me of a mail scam I recieved in the mail. The letter asks you to deposit a 5000.00 and mail 4800.00 back to them. A lot of people fall for scams like this.

  27. Henry E freewrite~~ That is a very interesting link. I actually became slightly addicted to the game, at least until I went crazy trying to figure out why is the nuke transforming into Africa! Was there something I missed? Wait so if America uses the mercy ball we nuke Africa? There must be a detail I missed or need to know because it is set up in a bank style. The American banks will cause the nuking of Africa? Am I the only one to come to this conclusion? This is from my first visit. Time to see what more information will do to this viewpoint!

  30. The story I read made me think about the things people go through for money. It's crazy to know that even in other countries money plays a big part in society. It doesn't matter how much money you have there's always some one who has more power then you. I guess that being said even if something is yours it can easily be taken away from you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Interesting point @Tobias. By you saying that it made me instantly think about the start of the "physical" act of slavery for African Americans. Our right for freedom was traded in the name of greed for wealth and power. Something that was ours so easily taken away.

  32. I remember recieving emails like this, and I know that I will never fall victim to any scam like that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bertha Dessein controlling ideas- The website was very confusing to me at first but, as i scan through it some more i had a more understanding of what i am about to learn. The first visual that poped up when i press on the website was a text that said "4-1-9 or you cant view a Masquerade by standing in one place". Next to it, it had four words Statement,Deposit,Withdrawal, and balance. I already had an idea that this documentation have something to do with money.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You guys got the point of the letter wrong,it is basically a scam letter from somewhere in the world trying to get gullible people to send them money. It's basically about scam letters from Nigeria, incase u receive such email,do not respond because it's a scam.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @rilwan can you elaborate on that idea some more because from reading the email I was under the impression that this couple had money that they are trying to smuggle out of the country with the aid of someone that in the end result would receive a profit. Am I completely wrong?

  36. Free write:
People around the world are always looking for a quick way to make money, be it by good intentions or bad. When an unsuspecting person recieves an email like this with the chance to get rich quickly, they are easy victims to scammers. The people behind these emails have no morals and use this as their way of getting rich. The con artists that prey on innocent, hard working people need to be stopped. I remember watching a documentary on these scammers, and how investigative reports went to Africa to try and track them down because people in the US were being victimised for millions of dollars. But it was almost impossible to get any hard evidence to pin on a particular individual. If more and more people are made aware of these scams like the help of this website 4-1-9, hopefully it will save people from being taken advantage of. Knowing how scammers operate, if one scam fails, they will always find another way to scam people out of their money.

PS. I don't know if everyone is having problems with this link loading to leave comments, like I'm having, because there should be more comments up here right?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @rilwan the more I read the letter I started to see what you was talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Realistically,if this is suppose to be some type of scam who in their right mind would fall for something so idiotic? Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would actually like to meet the person who is gullible enough to believe this. If they got the email then they should have google too at least and find out exactly what is going on that way.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Henry; When I got the letter in the mail I imediately knew it was a scam because; first, I already heard there was scams out there targeting people to show compasion; second, I called the number list on the letter and constantly received a busy signal; and finally, there was no way a stranger is going to ask me to deposit money in my own account for them and no be crazy! My common sense just would not let something like that happen to me. I hope others thought twice before responding.

What is the purpose of the game?
How are these noises relevant to the link?
What is the purpose of the scam?
Have any other actions been taken to eliminate the problem?
What makes the noises relevant to the essay?

  44. Leandrea Williams Freewrite:

The noises on the withdrawal link sound like something from outerspace. They sound really weird and eerie. It makes you think about all the bad stuff in the essay that was mentioned. In a way the essay doesn'tmake any sense to me but on the other hand it does. I want to know if this was the sounds that were going through the authors head when he was writing the article. Its really strange and confusing.

  45. Leandrea Williams Well-developed essay:

The basis of the controlling idea is to understand the point and purpose of the essay. Once you get the understanding of the essay, it will be better to elaborate on it. So since I don't have a clear understanding of it I can't give a well developed paragraph on it. If you get this Professor Patterson before class tomorrow maybe you can explain it to me. If not I will get the understanding of it tomorrow in class.

    4. what was the point

  47. Faithe's free write...
I have a slightly different opinion on the 4-1-9 website than i did the very first time i visited it. The withdrawal link wasn't quite as clear even though i did like it in a way. The music reminded me of something from outer space or a song that could be featured in a movie like that. It reminded me of the movie with Joaquin Phoenix called "Sign". that was an alien movie. And i also sort of liked the game, even though i get the feeling there was no actual point to it. It was kind of reminiscent of my life when people actually play pac man and semi-enjoyed it... It was very interesting how none of the links seemed to make actual connections with one another. They all seemed to be focused on different things, and maybe i'm misinterpreting it all together but thats the way it seemed.

  48. Brain storm:
    1) what exactly is the website trying to expose?
2)Are they trying to say that letters are putting a negative veiw on the Nigerians
3)when the letters are actually sent out do they go to any one in particular?
4)why doesnt the the deposit link work?
5)the game is to get us to understand what exactly

  49. Ugh i'm just getting the used to this and class is tomorrow

  50. Free Write: Thsi to me at first was a bit confusing, i really didn't understand the purpose of this essay. but now as a sit and really look at it for what it is then i can start to see thats its basically telling the stories of scam artist and like any person who finds something dishonest they decide to write about it. but also as i read it, it makes me think that its more so just stealing from the needy which people of all social classes seem to do. from what i personally take from it is that its not just trying to pin point nigerians specifically but is just using them as an example to how easy it can b

  51. Clementine Williams Freewrite: This statement made sound cliche' but its truths still remain prevalent: The love of money is the root to evil." Its such a misfortune the power that this inanimate object obtains but that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

  55. @ Clementine Williams, money is still the root of all evil, and when you’re desperate for money, someone might just fall for a scam like this.
