  2. Tobias freewrite:Listening to the speaker and watching the video I could not really understand what the speaker was saying had anything to do with the people playing soccer. The speaker talked about racism and how the N word is still be used today and that's very true. People of color uses the N word towards each other so how could we even get upset when white people use it towards us. The speaker also talked about people being prejudiced you still have a lot of people today that are prejudiced. I guess something like this will never go away.

  3. Okay, so listened to the essay and i found it quite interesting. She does make a lot of sense. At some point, when she began talking about black vs. white, i thought that may have some truth to it depending on the person's situation and personality, possibly. I also lost connection between the essay being read and the slow motion soccer players.

  4. Ok so I defintely had to watch a couple times before I had any thoughts about the video and the one thing that stuck out to me was the coined term "uturn." At first it seems that the players are chums, despite their positions on opposite teams and then there's the big blow to the chest. I mean what's that about? Is that apart of the game or what?

  6. this is joe ann noreiga, i understand what she was saying about racism, but my feeling is that she wasnt just talking about blacks. if you think about it, she was trying to get you to understand that in some way we all have some sort of predjudiceness in us when it comes to anyone that is not equated within what we call our own inner circle.in reference to the u-turn, the speaker was trying to say, put away our own pettiness and predjudices and learn how to get along with those of a different color or nationality.as for as the video is concerned at the end, this is just my thought, the soccer player in the white was turning the other cheek but the other player allowed what he was feeling about the player in white to control his actions by hitting him and knocking the player in the to the ground

  7. 1-what soccer teams were playing?
2-was this a world cup game or a friendly match?
3-did the guy with the blue jersey fake the injury so that the other guy could get thrown out of the game?
4-why weren't there different clips showing more acts of violence?
5-why was the whole clip shown in this video?

  9. Pete Barbier freewrite-i get the fact that the speaker was talking about racism and violence put together. What do you expect when a team like France and Italy play. They are both rivals and of course your going to expect some type of hatred amongst the player, fans and coaches.

  10. I think that the main purpose of the soccer match video is to demonstrate tolerance. Without tolerance, there will be conflict among the different culture, race, nationality and ethnicity of the world.

  11. i dont understand the reason for the soccer game also.an Rilwan does make a point

  12. this is Joe Ann Noreiga, I too agree with Rilwan's point of view.

  14. (Pete Barbier:controlling idea paragraph)
This speaker in the video talks more about racism and the rivalry between the two soccer players. She quotes racial sayings like "the n word" and "dirty terrorists." She also says "no black who has not wanted to smash any white face he may encounter in a day." I dont understand why she would use a soccer clip to show racial prejudice. But at the same time i get why she used that clip, because of the fact that the 2 soccer players are rivals and they dont get along.

  16. I believe this website is telling a story about racism and how it effects the minority (black, Arabs etc.).The name calling and inferiority of another race can take its toll and will eventually cause the suppressed to strike back. I would assume the video shows two players on the field and I would imagine the player in blue is antagonizing the player in white. The player in white, after having enough strikes backs

  18. Response to Joe Ann

Now what you said really made since and you really helped me understand more of what the whole concept was. When i see you in class you will get a thank you from me:)

  19. The video really showed me that it does not matter what color your skin is but the person you are. Everyone is a little prejudice at times and we all need to get out of our comfort zone and see all people more then just a skin tone. The soccer game was a good way of showing an example now that I understand more of what is going on while the speaker was reciting her knowledge. I enjoyed learning something new.

  22. Hector's 5 Questions
1- What does the video have to do with the poem?
2- Are they talking about Arabians or Blacks ?
3- Is there something behind the video?
    4- Who is this writer?
5- What's the name of the poem?

  23. This is JoeAnn Noreiga, as i listened to the speaker and watched the video, i think of what happened to Rodney King. His main point of view and popular slogan was " Can't we all just get along ?" I myself, have experienced this on this week whereas two people i know, one black one white , both female , got into a fight and now there is a lot of confusion and animosity. Everyone has forgotton that they are friends and now everyone is choosing sides instead of allowing everyone to still have their own opinion and it not get in the way of friendship.

  24. Honestly im really trying to understand this essay. I listened to it twice so maybe "three times a charm". Maybe the third time I'll understand but it sounds more like a poem than an essay to me.

  25. @ Marta, me too. I tried for days at the school computers but they have some kind of restriction on them. I'm on now, and hopefully it keeps working.

1.What was the whole concept of the soccer team playing?
2.Why was the speaker talking in the background of the soccer game?
3.What was i suppose to learn about what the speaker was saying and the soccer game?
4.Why was the soccer game chosen for this video?
5.Im still trying to understand the point of the soccer?

    ReplyDelete
  27. bertha dessein freewrite- As i was watching the soccer video and listening to the audio of the speaker in the background,I said to myself what did racism have to do with this soccer game. I didn't see any African/American players in the soccer game. The speaker also spoke about prejudiced, were the players in the soccer game being prejudiced against one another. There are alot of people in this world that are prejudiced. Racism, prejudiced, hatred will never go away until the world has ended.

  28. Hector- I have listened to this essay again and again. It's really difficult to understand and I do not see the connection with the video. All I know is that it talks about race, "Arabians" or "blacks" not really sure. This essay has really strong words that could hit the reader directly on its bad side. It uses the "N" word, and then finishes of saying "shit". It was quite uncomfortable hearing it.

  29. 1. Why soccer of all games chosen?
    2. Why was the video of Zidane from the world cup used?
3.Is racism the main point she was trying to point out or is there some message I can't see or hear?
4.What was meaning the name changes of cities as time moved on?
    5. Why were fire crackers, or bullets, sounds playing in the background during her reading in the video "existing conditions"?

  30. The more I watched the video I heard things that the speaker was saying before I'm getting more of a understanding of this video.

  31. 1. Why is the soccer game in the background?
    2. What does it represent?
    3. What is the point of the essay?
    4. Why does it seem unoragnized?
    5. Why is she talking like that?

This was to show how words can affect your actions and judgement even on a grand stage like the world cup. I remember watching that game and seeing the headbutt, and wondering why would he do something like that. It probably cost his team and country the chance at winning the World Cup, but after hearing his response to why he did that was a little disturbing. You can understand that if someone makes disparaging or racial remarks against you and your family, how would you react in that situation?

  33. @ Nile;
You have a very good point. I didn't see the soccer game but can relate to your point. I've been called out of my name from someone of another race and the experience at first left me left me speechless. Then I got mad and wanted to say some nasty thing back to them but by the time I got it mtself together from the shock, they were long gone. I had to evaluate the situation and brush it off because that person picked me at random and had no clue as to who Really was.

  34. 1. why was there a soccer game?
    2. I didnt understand the point that the woman in the background was trying to make?
    3. Was she talking about race?
    4. Her words were very strong, and what i did try to understand was that different people try to be the best but in return try to destroy others in their way.

  35. Leandrea Williams is confused about the whole essay and wants to question:

What was the purpose of the soccer game?
What is she talking about when she mentions European comrades?
Is the essay based om racism and criticisma and how each race is treated differently?
    Is this a poem?
Is this based on a life story?
Is this based on all races of people?
Why does she keep saying Big Algerian shit?
    Is she angry?
Are the images supposed to give the viewer a better understanding of the essay?
Is this whole essay metaphoric and directed to something else?

  36. guyaneseboi(Travis).. if the author was talking about racism which i do hope she was.. this vid wasn't an effective one..
for those who never saw the match, it was zidane's final match of his entire career.. got a red card for head butting the opponent..
maybe if we heard what was said prior to the incident..

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really hope in class we can make sense of why would she use Zidane's infamous soccer incident in slow motion during that reading. I noticed after reading the comments that the use of the soccer match was the main focus of the questions.

  38. Wow i honestly enjoyed that it was very entertaining and even the her voice had a eerie monotone to it it really captured my interest. from what i got from the essay it seemed like she was talking about living and interacting with people back in the civil rights time. It almost seemed like might have been pro African American rights, or she at least wanted a change but she was living in a place where change was seemly out of the question. when she spoke about her husband it was more of a resentment than rather any affection towards him. also when she said she didnt wan to flash a light in such a dark space made it seem like even though she was for the change she just didnt want to be the one to have to do it. very interesting piece

  39. @ Brianna, i feel the same it definitely sounded like a poem rather than an essay especially considering the way she read it

  40. 1. Why did the narrator decided to use super slow motion to tell her story?
    2. Would an incident like this ever happen on such a grand stage again?
    3. Would you loose your cool under the same circumstances?
    4. Why are we still experiencing racism to this day?
    5. When will people around the world just learn to love each other?

  41. @ Marla, would you believe that Thursday at the computer lab in school, there was a white woman who made a racial remark in a room where she was out numbered like 30 to 1. She’s lucky that no one really heard her before she stormed out. What made it worse was that its Black History month as well. SMH

  42. 1. Why did the narrator decide to use the 2006 World Cup?
    2. Would Zinedine Zidane ever forgive Marco Materazzi for the racial comments?
    3. Why did Zinedine only recieved a red card and Marco did not for the racial comments?
    4. How did the narrator want people to feel throughout her story?
    5. If Zinedine could go back to his last game before his retirement, would he avoid headbutting Marco?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe the video is showing how much one person can take of racial comments before they had enough. The reason I say this is because in the 2006 World Cup where Italy player Marco Materazzi kept provoking Zinedine Zidane with the racial slurs. Marco's taunting lead to the headbutting incident in the 2006 World Cup.

  44. The tone of voice the narrator uses in her narrated poem, creates a feeling that life is unfair. That the people of the world live a life of being treated unfriendly and unfair. Where people are unjust and the world has not reached peace. Where everyone is still under segregation and we live with people who are still racists on a lot of things. Like the color of a person's skin,a person's religion, hertiage, country, and much more.Any person gets picked on for many different reasons until another person digs a hole in someone's soul and breaks a person down until the react in a violent way, like what Macro did to Zinedine in the 2006 WorldCup.

  45. As a person who is studying TV Production, the way the video is shown in slow motion and the audio sound of a heartbeat. It makes me think that this is how the protagonist's heart is beating as he is both thinking things over while the antogonists is provoking him.Leading to violence after all the protagonist took in patients.

  46. The diction that the narrator uses makes us the audience wonder what is the meaning of the poem. Also the narrator's use of repetition of a single phrase makes us the audience wonder why she repeats it over a couple of times and what is it's significance to the poem and video. It creates a lot of questions and thoughts to all the audience who hear the narration and watch the video at the same time.
